The last time Air Canada (in any form) flew to New York City’s JFK Airport was on 3 April 2016. Those were Air Canada Express regional jets, flying double daily from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Although those JFK slots are valuable, the goal at the time was to focus on the large point-to-point traffic from Toronto to New York LaGuardia (LGA), and Star Alliance connections with United at Newark (EWR).
Now, however, owing to this (not quite) post-COVID 19 era, revenge travel has manifested, causing airlines everywhere to bedaub our wanderlust-filled imaginations with new routes all over the place. To wit, I’m going to fast-forward to 26 March 2023, when Air Canada — really, Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional subsidiary –will be reappearing at JFK for the first time in almost seven years.
This time, the flights will be double daily from Toronto, Canada’s largest city, and once daily from Montreal (YUL).
Let’s first see the details about the Toronto New York flights– it appears that there will be one flight in the late morning, and one in the early evening, good for folks visiting their families, tourists, and business travelers.
AC8554 Toronto YYZ 11:00 New York JFK 12:36 (no time zone change)
AC8556 YYZ 20:30 JFK 22:06
AC8553 JFK 10:00 YYZ 11:45
AC8555 JFK 13:25 YYZ 15:10
As for Montreal, that’s an evening departure from YUL, landing during the busy Europe-bound evening bank of flights at JFK.
AC8898 Montreal YUL 18:25 JFK 20:00
AC8899 JFK 12:45 YUL 14:20
For both the Toronto and Montreal routes, Jazz Aviation (once known as Air Canada Jazz) will be relying on the Embraer E175 aircraft, which has 76 total seats, or 12 in business class and 64 in economy class. Since JFK is a capacity-controlled airport, that means its trickier to get slots to fly there. Using smaller regional jets — as opposed to narrow-bodies — should make turnarounds quicker.
Random factoid: Air Canada was the first customer for the Embraer E175, receiving an order of 15 of them in 2005.
