Airport fans, rejoice: the new San Diego Terminal 1 is expected to initiate operations next month. For those of us who are too impatient to wait for that first flight to land, the airport will be hosting an open house.

As a former, albeit brief, resident of San Diego, I’m glad to be reminded of the news. Although the views were always cool when landing at the country’s busiest single-runway commercial airport, I never found the airport UX (user experience) to be too pleasant. Whereas that’s generally par for the course in the U.S., there are those rare airports — e.g. New York LaGuardia, Kansas City, MO — that are making strides.
That brings me back to the new San Diego Terminal 1. Slated to open for business on the evening of 22 September, the airport authority has a little surprise in store earlier that month. Called the Community Reveal: Open House, anyone can swing by on 14 September between 9am and 12pm for a pre-opening self-guided tour. Some of the future food vendors will also be around to hand out samples; something like an Air Costco, but less tacky.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the new San Diego Terminal 1 will have a total of 19 gates, new places to eat and shop, and water fountains piping in the best of the Hudson Valley (ok, San Diego is a quality place to live, but the water left much to be desired).
